The water bottle industry: a saturated market
CMF Trends
CMF plays a huge role in water bottle design as many of the forms are relatively simple.
Current CMF trends for consumer products excue the idea of refined playfulness and use “nature-adjacent” colors. The bright colors are fun and child-like while the pastel undertones communicate decisiveness and maturity. There are two types of color combinations that are most popular right now and somewhat in conflict of each other.
The first is a monochromatic color palette in which a product has multiple elements of the same color but can differentiate the shapes through texture and finish. The second is a complimentary color pop, where the majority of the product is one color but there is a pop of that color’s compliment to create interest.
Form & Interaction Development
We started exploring form through simple orthographic profiles that were rooted in plastic and metal manufacturing processes.
Interactions for water bottles revolve around the top so our exploration focused on the open and locking mechanisms of the lid.
Concept Refinement
As we refined the forms, we paired the bottle designs with appropriate lid mechanisms to create more holistic concepts. The lid mechanisms were developed in CAD and used as sketch underlays to ensure realism and feasibility.
